Letter To Survivors
Guide Contents
Dear Survivors, In Hampden County and throughout the country, prosecutors regularly observe the pain suffered by victims of crime, especially those who have been devastated by homicide. Losing a loved one under any circumstance is one of the most difficult aspects of the human condition. When that loss is the result of violence, survivors must confront the additional rage and feelings of powerlessness that arise from the knowledge that some person intentionally caused the death of their loved one. The psychological injury which results is beyond measure, and these feelings are difficult to resolve.
The investigation and the prosecution of those responsible may add to the trauma experienced by the survivors. This is unavoidable regardless of empathy expressed by the prosecutor, advocates and other court personnel because the judicial process is limited, and it cannot return the loved one to our midst. However, having information about the criminal justice system and how it works, as well as knowing about the experiences of others in similar situations, can be helpful.
We salute Nancy Larson for her commitment and dedication to making this handbook a reality. It should be used as a resource but should not replace the advocates or attorneys handling your case. The District Attorney's staff is available to answer your concerns and I encourage you to bring them to their attention.
