| The Massachusetts Victim Bill of Rights (MGL c.258B) establishes the following rights and protections for victims of crime, including homicide survivors. |
| Notification of court dates, appearances, delays in proceedings, changes in the development of the case, and final disposition of the case. Prompt disposition of the case. Secure waiting areas, where and when available. The right to file a victim impact statement with the court after the offender has been convicted, and before sentencing is imposed. Assistance in seeking limited compensation under the Victims of Violent Crime Act for medical, funeral, and other stated out-of-pocket expenses incurred as a result of the murder. The right to be informed of social services available to you as the survivor of a homicide victim. Return of personal property when there is no longer a need to preserve it as evidence. (Items unrelated to the crime may be returned sooner.) Employer, creditor, and landlord intervention. Protection for you and your family if threatened by the defendant. The right to be informed by the appropriate officials whenever an offender is being considered for parole or for temporary, provisional, or final release from custody. |
